Kuelap, the most important archaeological site in northeastern Peru, was built by the Chachapoya culture around 800 AD. It is renowned for its monumental structures of massive stones, covering an area of 6 hectares atop Cerro Barreta, over 3,000 meters above sea level. From here, you can appreciate its connection to the natural surroundings of the montane or cloud forest.

In the afternoon, we will visit the archaeological site of Macro. From Tingo Nuevo, we will take a mule trail to the Utcubamba River, crossing at Huaro to meet Jesús and his family, who will explain their Eco Finca project. Here, you will experience their daily activities and enjoy a hike to the Macro ruins. Alternatively, the visit can include a boat ride along part of the Utcubamba River, followed by a hike.
The site features structures known as the “Macro Towers” for their distinctive construction. Belonging to the Chachapoya culture, these circular structures feature rhombus designs similar to those found at Kuelap and La Congona.

After savoring a delicious cup of coffee, we will head to the property of one of the cooperative members to participate in the organic coffee production process. Activities may include preparing the soil, making organic compost, weeding, planting, working in the nursery, harvesting, artisanal grinding, and roasting.
We will then explore the archaeological site of Wimba.

Level of difficulty
The tour to Laguna de Huamanpata is a medium-level activity, featuring a hike of approximately 4 to 5 hours. The journey begins at 1,550 meters above sea level and ascends to 2,100 meters along a sandy path with small stones. This stretch of the trail is free of vegetation, offering clear views of the Mendoza Valley.
From the first resting point, we continue ascending to the highest point at 2,400 meters above sea level. This portion of the trail is shaded by vegetation, allowing us to enjoy the sounds of birdsong. The entire route consists of limestone terrain until we reach the next resting point, which marks the boundary between Rodríguez de Mendoza and the Huamanpata Conservation Area.
Finally, we will descend to 2,130 meters above sea level, where Laguna de Huamanpata is located.
